Please note: TPC Consignment is on hold as we continue to test the best way to serve our customers. In the meantime, our Delayed Cash offering is available to provide another alternative to our Store Credit and Instant Cash offers. Open TPC Consignment offers that we've already extended to sellers are unaffected, and will be honored.
What is TPC Consignment?
TPC Consignment is a flexible and certain way to sell your bike with The Pro's Closet. (You can also sell your bike to us for Instant Cash, Delayed Cash, Store Credit, or TradeUp Credit; learn more.)
You just send us your bike. That’s all! We do all the hard work for you. We clean it up, service it, photograph it, list it on our site, market it, and handle any/all questions from buyers.
The faster your bike sells, the more money you get. Not to brag, but 72% of our bikes sell within 30 days. But if your bike doesn't sell within 120 days of being listed, we pay you out anyway!
How does TPC Consignment work?
Send us basic info about your bike, including pictures. If we want your bike, we'll send you three offers, including a TPC Consignment offer (the other two offers are Instant Cash and Store Credit).
When you choose TPC Consignment, you agree to get paid within four days of your bike selling on our site (often faster, but depends on weekends and holidays). This could happen within hours of us posting it, or it could take weeks. 72% of our bikes sell within 30 days.
We handle all aspects of cleaning, servicing, photographing, listing, and marketing your bike. And we handle all questions and inquiries from potential buyers as well (AND returns and all customer service-related issues).
If your bike doesn’t sell within 120 days, we will pay you the pre-agreed minimum amount. While we aim to avoid this outcome to maximize earnings for both parties, you’ll receive your payment, and your involvement will be complete. We’ll handle the rest, and you won’t need to worry about the bike any further.
What are the advantages of TPC Consignment?
The primary advantage of TPC Consignment is that you get the chance to maximize the value of your bike while still having a guaranteed fallback payment if your bike doesn't sell.
On top of that (and maybe this is really the primary advantage) we do all the hard work for you: cleaning, servicing/fixing/tuning, photographing, listing, marketing, answering customer questions, handling returns, etc.
Since we split the sale with you (and you always get the lion’s share of the split), it's in both of our interests to get your bike sold at as high a price as possible, and as fast as possible.
How much will I get paid?
The short answer is: About 67% of what your bike sells for. But the exact share you get varies, and will be presented to you up front.
We take the remainder of the sale price to cover shipping, labor, servicing, marketing, listing, fulfillment, etc.
The detailed answer is: It depends on several factors, such as the desirability of your bike based on daily market data and trends, and our current inventory levels in its size, discipline, and price tier.
If we think your bike will sell quickly, without a lot of labor or service needed, then we may offer you a higher cut, above 67%, since our job will likely be easier.
Or, if your bike is great, but we know it needs a proprietary part or more involved service, we may offer you a cut slightly below 67%.
It's worth remembering that the same exact bike, in the same exact condition, may get different offers at different points in time due to our inventory, recent trends, time of year, etc.
How do I know when my bike has sold?
We'll email you! You'll also see the status of your bike updated on our Sell // Trade site (it'll go from On Sale to Complete).
Also, once we list your bike, we'll also provide you with a link to the listing. Please share this out! Remember, the sooner it sells, the sooner (and higher) you get paid! Listing your bike can happen in as few as 1-2 days after we receive it, but can take longer if we need to order and wait on parts.
How do I get paid?
You'll be paid via PayPal email address you provide to us.
Your payment will show up within four days of your bike selling on our site (often faster, but depends on weekends and holidays) or, if your bike doesn't sell within 120 days of being listed, the end of this waiting period.
What type of stuff can I consign with you?
Right now, only bikes.
In the future, we may offer TPC Consignment for wheels and frames. Interested? Tell us! Please take a few seconds to fill out this form.
Are there different bike standards/requirements for consigned bikes?
No. We have the same high standards for consigned bikes as we do for bikes we buy via cash or credit offers. In brief, those standards are:
- Bike Disciplines: Road, Mountain, TT, Triathlon, Cyclocross, Gravel, and E-Bikes (E-Road, E-MTB, E-Hybrid)
- Bike Model Years: Within the last 6 years (i.e. 2018 or newer)
- Bike Value/Tier/Price Point: Original MSRP of $2,000 or higher
Check the "What is TPC Buying?" section here for more details.
How does TPC Consignment differ from other offers you make me?
What if something is wrong with my bike?
Like any other bike we buy, hidden or undisclosed damage will result in your offer being amended or failed.
Broken or damaged carbon (or other serious defects) will cause your bike to fail our rigorous Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) process. We’re serious about, and dedicated to, ensuring the bikes we sell are safe. Less catastrophic damage will result in your offer being amended.
This means that, if we think we can fix your bike but need to invest extra parts or labor into it that we didn't plan on when we first offered to buy it, we'll send you a new offer that will be lower, to reflect our additional costs.
If you accept our amended offer, we'll proceed with servicing and listing your bike, and you'll still get paid out at the time of the sale (or at 120 days after listing if it doesn't sell in that time period).
If you don't accept our amended offer, or if your bike fails our CPO process due to broken carbon or other serious defects, we'll send your bike back to you. This is the only scenario in which we send a TPC Consignment bike back to you.
Can I get my bike back?
The short answer is no.
The one exception is if there is undisclosed damage to your bike that results in us either failing your bike or sending you an amended offer which you reject.
Other than rejecting an amended offer, and in accordance with our policies and the agreement you sign when you consign a bike to us, we won't return your bike because we put significant work into cleaning, servicing, repairing, tuning, photographing, listing, and marketing your bike. This is also why we can guarantee that you'll get paid, even if your bike doesn't sell in 120 days after being listed.
How long does it take to list my bike?
Your bike can show up for sale on our site in as few as 1-2 days after we receive it!
That is our best-case scenario though, for bikes already in great shape that don't need much work. On average, we get bikes through our CPO process and up for sale on our site in well under two weeks, which includes waiting for any proprietary, hard-to-find, or on-back-order parts.
What do the statuses on my submission mean?
In our Sell // Trade site, you can expect to see the following flow as your consigned bike moves through the TPC Consignment process. Note that this flow is very similar to what happens with any type of submission you make with TPC, but there are a couple steps that are unique to consigned bikes (noted below).
- Item Submitted - You've sent us pics and basic details of the bike you want to sell.
- Offer Proposed - We've reviewed your submission, want it, and have sent you a few offers.
- Acceptance Pending - You've agreed to one of our offers, so we're doing some extra legal legwork.
- Get Ready to Ship - Everything about your bike checked out, we sent you a shipping label, and are awaiting it eagerly. (Our offer expires if we don't receive the bike within 14 days, at which point the bike can be resubmitted for a new offer or, if the bike is in transit when the offer expires, we will reopen the offer.)
- Item Received - Your bike has been delivered to us, but not yet inspected.
- Processing (unique to TPC Consignment) - Your bike is going through our rigorous CPO process to get it as good as new for its next owner.
- On Sale (unique to TPC Consignment) - Your bike has been fully processed and is now on sale on our site!
- Completed - You're about to get paid because A) your bike sold or B) it didn't sell but it's been listed for 120 days and we're paying you out anyway.
Can I cross-list my bike?
We understand the desire to reach the largest possible audience when trying to sell your bike. You want to get the most for your ride!
This is why consigning your bike with TPC is a great choice. We are the #1 seller of Certified Pre-Owned bikes in the world, and our audience is huge.
We need to have your bike in our possession (so that we can clean, service, and list it) so cross-listing your bike is a bad idea.
Plus, listing your bike elsewhere means that you need to handle all the tedious stuff that goes with it, like answering the inevitable “Is this still available?” questions, haggling with dubious buyers, meeting strangers in parking lots, fielding lowball offers, and so forth. Let us take care of this nonsense for you!
Unless you reject an amended offer we send to you upon discovering unexpected or undisclosed damage to your bike, we do not send your bike back to you, because we guarantee that you get paid.
What else do I need to know?
- If your bike isn't selling at its initial list price, we may lower the price to entice buyers. We reserve the right to do this at our discretion. It means your cut of the sale price shrinks, but so does ours. This is why we show you a range for your payout. We only do this if we think it'll get your bike sold before further price drops are needed. You'll always get at least the pre-agreed minimum amount.
- We may modify or alter your bike. Trust us on this; we know what it takes to sell pre-owned bikes. This means, among other things, we may replace your sweet neon yellow bar tape, swap your tires out, change components, and so forth. We take this into account when we make an offer on your bike. We do not send back any parts/accessories/components that we take off or change.
- Your bike may be listed higher or lower than very similar bikes. No two CPO bikes are truly the same, based on previous use and the work we do to get them into great shape. No two points in time are truly the same either, based on the daily pricing, demand, and inventory data we crunch.
- You have no risk if your bike is purchased and then returned. Once we pay you out (either due to sale, or lack of sale at 120 days after listing), our TPC Consignment transaction is complete. Anything that happens after that (an eventual sale, a sale and a return and then a re-listing and re-sale, a liquidation, etc.) is entirely TPC's responsibility. To be extra clear: You don't get paid out twice if your bike sells, gets returned, and then sells again.
- Remember, your bike won't be returned if it doesn't sell after 120 days after being listed. We pay you out the minimum price agreed upon up front. Then, we'll do what we need to to recoup what we paid you out, and any resulting sale goes entirely to us.
- See full legal agreement here.
